Cottonwood is a city located in Yavapai County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 9,179. Cottonwood has much to offer those seeking a place to raise a family and to continue an active lifestyle. Our quality of life is exceptional. The community is growing just fast enough to offer the services and amenities required to meet family, social, educational and recreational needs, while still retaining a small town atmosphere.
Cottonwood is 3,300 feet above sea level, providing almost ideal weather conditions year-round, which allow our residents to enjoy a tremendous variety of recreational opportunities that exist throughout our valley. Experience everything from viewing Pre-Columbian Sinaguan sites, to officer's quarters at a cavalry fort, taking a train excursion along the Verde River Canyon, enjoying a cowboy dinner show and a night at the casino all in a single day!! Cottonwood is rightly proud of its "Old Town", and this unique area has many unique shops and galleries featuring art, antiques, jewelry, pottery and many additional items. The Old Town has undergone a face lift in the last few years, one that preserves the look of the old, while bringing in elements of the new.
For those who wish to experience eco-tourism, Red Rock State Park is the place with special programs focusing on wildlife, green meadows framed by native study, hiking, picnicking and bird watching. Twenty hiking trails have been identified for hiking enthusiasts, in the Oak Creek Canyon and West Sedona areas.
The community support for schools is strong, as is parent involvement. There have been numerous prestigious scholarships awarded to Verde Valley students. Cottonwood has one high school and five elementary schools. Two post-secondary college opportunities allow students to earn degrees up to the Masters level locally.
Cottonwood is considered to be the hub of the Verde Valley, it's name is derived from the many Cottonwood trees that abound along the Verde River. Cottonwood is primarily an industrial, commercial and retail trading center, and provides a variety of professional services. The area's historical background includes 11th century Indian cliff dwellings at Montezuma Castle National Monument, Tuzigoot National Monument, and Historic Old Town.

Foist wants out at Mingus
COTTONWOOD - Counting back to Mingus Union School Superintendent Sharyl Allen, who resigned in June 2007, the district has had three superintendents and two interim superintendents in less than four years. Now, current Superintendent Tim Foist has asked the school board to release him from his contract a year early so that he can resign effective June 30.
Harvest Time
The fifth annual Page Springs Cellars Harvest Festival was held on Sunday to celebrate the end of the grape growing season and to give the public a chance to experience the green sprawling property, sample the wines produced on site and enjoy live music.
River group to employ Community Outreach Director
The Verde Valley Land Preservation Institute and Friends of Verde River Greenway, with assistance from the Walton Family Foundation, announce a joint program to assist local communities to protect river flows, improve riverside habitat and increase sustainable river recreation in the Verde Valley.
